The hike area was in the remote Wartrail valley, south of Lesotho and at the southern tip of the Drakensberg, in the Tiffendell area. It was an 8 hour trip to cover the 600+ kms. We travelled through rain storms and some of the first group caught a hail storm. The scenic Barkly Pass was impressive. We had a petrol stop at Barkly East and from there it was 45 kms of rutted dirt roads. Our driver, Carolee, managed superbly in her EcoSport.
What an attractive sight greeted us weary travellers. Tents were pitched on a green lawn on a huge cave overhang called Balloch Cave. Young Kim Frost was there to welcome us and give us a briefing. Cheerful, chatty Bella prepared a tasty dinner for us, braaied lamb chops, pork ribs, wors and lovely salads. We enjoyed this with our wine preferences as the day cooled to a fresh evening. Hot showers in the full ablution block were welcome. This was civilised camping. We’d all fallen into our sleeping bags by 8.30 pm with high anticipation of the hikes ahead.
