Report and photographs by Libby Deysel

Ten members – Rhona, Sharon H., Sharon L., Ed, Cynthia, Roland, Lisa, Bruce, Carolee and Libby were joined by four friends of Sharon and Ed for the hike on the Waterfall Trail.    Having completed the indemnity form and paid, we drove down to the parking spot above the falls.

The route to the Waterfall walk, takes in part of the Butterfly walk and branches off down fairly steeply to the path to the bottom of the falls.  There were a pair of nesting Egyptian Geese on a ledge high up by the waterfall.  Not much water was coming over the falls, but there is a very large pool and we sat amongst the rocks for a tea break.   Bruce told us about the cave near the top where archaelogists have found ancient remains.

We had to return along the same path back onto the ridge, crossed the weir and the dam wall and had lunch in the shade by the dam.   Lisa and Bruce and Ed and Sharon had to leave the hike, but the rest of us carried on to walk the Sunset Trail and part of the Dam walk back to the cars – a total of about 14 kms.

We did see Wildebeest, Nyala, Impala, Ostrich, young Ground Hornbills, Yellow Billed Kites and on the way out we spotted about four giraffe fairly close to the reception area.   It was quite disappointing not to see the Eland, but hopefully next time we do the trails.

Hopefully, Celma, Sharon, Solly and Andy, the visitors, will think about joining the Club as they appeared to enjoy the hike.
